A tale of two texts Today is first working day after Brexit EU publishes 33 pages of guidelines for next stage of Brexit: Johnson makes a tub-tumping speech about free trade: In a year's time, which text will be more relevant?

Although has now closed down, the Foreign Secretary was unable to tell me in the House of Commons just now which minister is responsible for the negotiations on our future relationship with the EU.

On Friday the UK formally left a free trade agreement with 27 other neighbours and also the EU's trade agreements around world Today Johnson makes a speech in favour of free trade It is like a prime minister abolishing NHS on a Friday and praising free health care on the Monday

Thank you little Englanders. The power of the UK passport has dropped to its lowest position in world rankings since The Henley Passport Index began in 2006.

Leo Varadkar hits back at No10: “Let’s not repeat the mistakes made in the past. Let’s not set such red lines, and let’s tone down the nationalistic rhetoric”. Also calls diplomats’ new seating instructions akin to “primary school” (it’s going to be another long year)

Divergence means checks. That was always crystal clear. You choose to diverge then you suffer the consequences of checks. It really is that simple.

I mean, go and talk to the Swiss, see how they like to be on the wrong end of EU arm-twisting...they don't, but they are being dragooned into signing an Association Agreement that leaves them, in practice, subordinate to the EU. In an unequal relationship...but guess what? /10

I note with a certain dismal fascination the return in international relations discourse of the concept of ‘reasonableness’, the rough translation of which is, “Why won’t they do what I want?”

When March 2018 EUCO confirmed “its readiness to initiate work towards a balanced, ambitious and wide-ranging free trade agreement (FTA) insofar as there are sufficient guarantees for a level playing field” it was not exactly being ambiguous about it, was it?

The government literally wrote in one of their referendum documents explaining the options outside that this would happen and you all said the government were lying and it was all project fear. It's not the EU's fault you didn't listen.

Post-Brexit truths, we'll develop these over time, just a couple for now... 1. Free Trade Agreements do not deliver free trade (only more free in terms of tariffs compared to WTO)
