While studying in Cambridge, I once gave a conference talk. A giant in my field was in attendance and gave me nice input. 1/Nhttps://twitter.com/dclingi/status/1085645130839687172 …

I've been thinking a lot about this thread and how to respond to it. I was trained at a top institution and now work at a non-top institution. I've published in a top-five journal, but "only" once. 1/n https://twitter.com/simardcasanova/status/1084962269719678976 …

Long after my affiliation changed, I presented the same slides at another large conference. The only difference: my affiliation. 2/N

I recall the aha moment: realizing that the benefit of a doubt hinges on these affiliations and capital. As someone who never thought I’d go to college, or grad school, I was naive about just how deeply these things matter/mattered. I’m still learning how internalized they are.

Wow what a gut punch. This also shifts my priors about listing former prestigious affiliations alongside your opinion (e.g., in Twitter bio) to "maybe douchey, but useful"

"It's much better"? So like as well as just seeing the brand, he also took it upon himself to do his damnedest to foot-stomp the provincial nonentity, just for the sake of it?

I noticed when I moved to a non RG institution (still good, but not RG) that my publication and grant success rate suddenly fell like a stone. It was like becoming invisible.

In the alternative timeline where he would see the two presentations in reverse order. I wonder what might have been said. Maybe a similar thing, maybe not.
