I'm not sure they're as different as all that.
yes, the two versions that you specifically first think of, have different degrees of damage. https://ulwaluko.co.za/Photos.html shows extreme damage that can be done.

I find it telling that when reformers suggested substituting a light prick on the clitoris with a pin for FGM, as a symbolic gesture, anti-FGM activists went ape-shit and wouldn't hear of it. Yet chopping off the entire prepuce from baby boys gets a free pass.

Do me a favour and read what I actually said. I said that even a light pinprick (when that was suggested as a symbolic gesture) was unacceptable to campaigners for girls, but amputation of the prepuce in boys gets a free pass.

Elsewhere I said that while the worst that's done to girls is worse than the worst that's done to boys the whole thing is a spectrum and the damage done to boys is comparable or worse than what's done to *some* girls. Both should be equally unacceptable.

This was said in reply to someone who told me it was "insulting" to compare circumcision with FGM. It is not. It's time we saw circumcision as abuse that's comparable to FGM and sits on the same spectrum.
