I'm not sure they're as different as all that.

There is a variety of different severities of FGM, and listening to men who've been circumcised that's not a barrel of laughs either. It's a spectrum, and MGM lies within the spectrum encompassed by FGM.

People who are comfortable with circumcision throw their hands up in horror at the suggestion a ritual light pinprick to a baby girl's clitoris could be offered as a symbolic substitute for full FGM. Double standards all over the place, huge helpings of denial & rationalisation.

I agree "they're both equally vile and abhorrent". I agree the reasons for doing either are indefensible in modern times, although they do differ to some extent. I can't see any insult at all in discussing them as similar, related procedures.

FGM often includes turning the vagina and urethra into one tiny hole that doesn't sufficiently let our either urine or menstrual blood (and that's before we discuss childbirth). To compare that to having some foreskin cut off is bullshit. And no-one born male can have FGM, FFS.

I obviously agree with your last point. However, while FGM sometimes involves very radical procedures this is not always the case, sometimes the procedure done is less invasive than circumcision. As I said, it's a spectrum.

And dismissing circumcision as "having some foreskin cut off" is seriously underplaying what is itself an invasive and risky procedure which many men greatly regret having done to them. Seeing circumcision as no big deal is a cultural outlook that needs to change.

I don't underestimate that it can be traumatic for men who've had it done. But it is removal of the foreskin as opposed to devastating mutilation that can be deadly and destroys even basic biological function in females and causes untold pain. The two are not comparable.

yes, the two versions that you specifically first think of, have different degrees of damage. https://ulwaluko.co.za/Photos.html  shows extreme damage that can be done.

I find it telling that when reformers suggested substituting a light prick on the clitoris with a pin for FGM, as a symbolic gesture, anti-FGM activists went ape-shit and wouldn't hear of it. Yet chopping off the entire prepuce from baby boys gets a free pass.

Do me a favour and read what I actually said. I said that even a light pinprick (when that was suggested as a symbolic gesture) was unacceptable to campaigners for girls, but amputation of the prepuce in boys gets a free pass.

          Replying to @DrMoragKerr @SmokingJungle1 and

Elsewhere I said that while the worst that's done to girls is worse than the worst that's done to boys the whole thing is a spectrum and the damage done to boys is comparable or worse than what's done to *some* girls. Both should be equally unacceptable.

This was said in reply to someone who told me it was "insulting" to compare circumcision with FGM. It is not. It's time we saw circumcision as abuse that's comparable to FGM and sits on the same spectrum.
