I had the same experience with the same track. I worked on lossy music encoding in the 00s. One challenge was that people were so used to mp3 artifacts (mostly due to crappy encoders and low bit rates) that folks would ABX the mp3 version, then rate it higher!
The Prodigy’s “Firestarter” was the first mp3 I ever downloaded, from a sketchy-a-f warez site in like 1996. Early encoders had all sorts of artifacts, and to this day when I hear the song it sounds _wrong_ without those blips

I’m curious what my first mp3 was. My first digital music file I believe was “Push It” (Salt ‘n’ Peppa) downloaded from some BBS using my Commodore 64. The file was so relatively big, only a 30s clip was available. Pretty low quality, but I loved it. That is still my Push It ref
