Fun follow-up, my university’s IT ticketing system just hangs on “submitting” when I click it.

Which is going to be more complicated, our university enterprise licensing scheme for Office, Adobe products, or Matlab? The answer may surprise you!

I really wish I could get my laptop detailed, the way I can get my car detailed. Like, take it into the Genius Bar, pay $50, and it comes out clean and like new an hour later.

ML conferences should also start having COI slides, ... some talks feel like advertisements. So many faculty have "dual" industry-academia roles now in ML.

If you want to change my mind on this you should invite me to give a talk!

Invited talks are such a weird thing to put on your CV. Half my “invited talks” are “a friend of mine wanted to spend department/corporate money to hang out” and the other half are “I invited myself because I was in town anyway.”

As a professor the punishment for messing up the schedule in your seminar is that you suddenly find yourself having to present a paper last-minute! God help us all!

Everything about our university reimbursement workflow feels like a phishing attack, from the random-in-time contentless notifications down to the fact that it doesn’t bother to use the our SSO infrastructure. “Type your password into this web form if you want money”, they said!

The Prodigy’s “Firestarter” was the first mp3 I ever downloaded, from a sketchy-a-f warez site in like 1996. Early encoders had all sorts of artifacts, and to this day when I hear the song it sounds _wrong_ without those blips

I’m floored by this ad I saw from US Customs and Border Patrol in this week’s Economist trying to whitewash the privacy implications of wide-scale biometrics deployment. On the bright side, complaining about privacy must make enough noise that they feel compelled to say this?

I just put “restart browser” on my to-do for today, between the open Jupyter notebooks, papers via my library’s proxy, and google docs, restarting chrome for a security update is now like rebooting Windows in 1998.
