My #1 unsafe mistake seems to be forgetting to use ptr::write instead of assignment, getting a double free or dropping an uninitialized value. I wonder what we could do about this

Sometimes I wish pointers were only allowed to be dereferenced using as_ref()/as_mut(), but there was also convenient -> operator for accessing fields behind the pointer, as in my_ptr->field. Then you wouldn't be tempted to do *http://x.as _ref().unwrap() = val;
