FYI: I'm Stina! I'm a neuroscience master student from and currently starting to write my thesis at . My working group investigates the neuroscience of obesity. I do scicomm mostly on instragram, but I'm trying to figure out how works ✌️

  8. The best correlations of intelligence that exist consider the number of cortical neurons, their packaging density, and their axonal conduction velocity. 🏃However, even those are not perfect. (10/10)

  9. To conclude, in larger brains cortical information processing capacity is slower than in humans or apes (which still have big brains compared to rats). (9/n)

  10. Whales have a lower conduction velocity, meaning thinner myelin sheaths, compared to humans, even though they have a greater interneuronal distance to bridge over. (8/n)

  11. How fast a neuron can pass a signal is i.a. determined by the thickness of the myelin sheath, a lipid–rich layer around the axons (like the insulation around cables) of the neurons. Roughly spoken, the thicker the sheath is, the higher the conduction velocity. (7/n)

  12. Of course bigger brains like in whales are not filled with air. However, they might contain less neurons or less tightly packed neurons than in other brains. The distance between neurons might be bigger, so the information has to be passed over a greater distance. (6/n)

  13. just because you receive a huge gift 🎁 with the most amazing wrapping paper doesn’t mean the content is better than of a small present. Same with the weight. The big gift might be filled with air 🎈, while the small present might contain something of big emotional value. (5/n)

  14. Short answer: NOPE. In vertebrates including mammals, high intelligence is correlated neither with absolute nor relative brain size (corrected for body size). Think of the brain as a present: (4/n)

  15. if it is conscious, can adopt the perspective of someone else, learn from experiences, solve problems. Many of these things can be attributed to different mammals and corvid birds, some being more intelligent than others. But does this difference stem from brain size?📐 (3/n)

  16. First of all: what is intelligence? This question is a hard one and controversially discussed. Some consider an individual as intelligent if it can fabricate and use tools 🔨(‚planning‘), recognize itself in the mirror (‚self–awareness‘), (2/n)

  17. The bigger the better? While that might be subjective for some things in life, a bigger brain 🧠 does not = higher intelligence.💡 To give you an idea of different brain sizes, I drew a brain of a toothed whale, human, dog, ape, and rat. Can you guess which is which? (1/n)
