    I see a lot of articles heralding Among Us and Plasmophobia as inspiring news for indie dev, but my personal takeaway is kind of the opposite. The lesson to me is have ad money, know content creators or don't compete in that space unless you're OK with a low odds lotto ticket.

    Maybe developer made high heat presets that are challenging but well balanced w/ tracked or cosmetically rewarded completion? Daily challenge w/ leaderboards also works.

    Hades is a real gem, but I hope the endgame gets another pass. Heat system is clever in theory but in practice you are incentivized to select stuff that doesn't really change the way you play and the power curve keeps you OP through dozens of escapes.

    I know there are a few others, like Charterstone and Betrayal Legacy etc but it really feels like co-operative massively took over the genre

    Why aren't there more competitive legacy board games like Risk Legacy? Do they just not sell compared to co-operative? To me, Risk Legacy feels like a genuine design breakthrough while Gloomhaven-likes feel much more like a small twist on a standard RPG formula

    Nothing against Unity & Unreal, they are great and I use Unity every day. They are much much better than mapmaking and modding in many ways. But they are no substitute for some of the things we gave up. It's no coincidence that Autochess is a DotA 2 mod and not a Unity game.

    Trading modding communities for Unity & Unreal is one of the worst trades we've made as an industry. It makes me very sad to think of all the PUBG, DotA CS-level innovations we are missing out on because young designers are debugging C# instead of making SC, WC3, NWN & ARMA maps.
