If the Right in Britain wanted to start taking economics seriously again, what would that look like? Here's my and 's attempt at an answer.

As I suspect reading the headlines and reactions yesterday the "cities pull away" theme was largely unfounded. The pulling away is by what most of the "but towns" crowd would call towns. Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, are all in the "falling behind" group.

  4. Scottish economy question: is it right to say we should be *especially* impressed by Scotland's high growth because - I'm making assumptions here - Scotland is disproportionately reliant on FS & O&G/oil services and those sectors have underperformed recently?

Children's television viewing is falling off a *cliff* as they just mainline YouTube instead. This is the change in just one year, counted as hours of broadcast television consumed per week.

New from me: No, liberal professors are not brainwashing their students. You all know the Indoctrination Thesis. For large sections of the Right, it is taken as Gospel proof. But the overwhelming weight of evidence says it does not happen.

In the West, the debate seems to be place and community versus mobility and atomisation, but I think that's a super narrow view. The strongest communities I've experienced were international (Inc small religious movements) and some of the most atomised were fixed in place

  13. The term "inclusive innovation" irks me a bit, because it seems to mean lots of incompatible things. This great presentation from explores the contradictions in a balanced, sympathetic way.

Taking their numbers, 25,000 empty homes out of a total stock of roughly 3,500,000 homes is an astonishingly low number. It's the symptom of a massive crisis of undersupply - London should be building so much more that the number of empty homes rises dramatically.

Has making it harder to move from the North to London made the North less productive? It may seem paradoxical, but the answer is yes.

I'm writing an article comparing old print reading to modern digital consumption ... so here is a break down of what a Vogue magazine used to look like. It's kind of crazy that the first non-ad page was on page 48, and the first article didn't show up until page 75.

99 smartphones are transported in a handcart to generate virtual traffic jam in Google Maps. Through this activity, it is possible to turn a green street red which has an impact in the physical world by navigating cars on another route!
