Short thread: Are face shields better than masks? Are they more effective against Covid-19? Are they easier and more sociable to wear? (Here's how they look in comparison on me.)pic.twitter.com/z8KMKp7T8a

If you know of extensive research on the medical effectiveness of face shields vs. masks, please link it here. What I could find easily suggests that face shields are really good, probably better than most masks. One such report:https://www.self.com/story/face-shields-coronavirus …

In terms of sociability, the face shield is a huge improvement over masks. Your face--your smile-- is fully visible instead of concealed like a bandit. Lip readers can read you. You can put it on and off like a hat. Mine from Amazon--2 for $25 https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B086BQ81VZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00 …

The face shield can be infinitely re-used--just clean the plastic. Your voice doesn't sound muffled. Off your face it lies flat or stores easily on a hook. A lot of models are available. The KlearStand I got is simple and clever in its design. What do other users here say? /

I should add: Covid infection CAN get in through your eyes. Most masks offer no eye protection; a face shield protects eyes completely. And it fits over glasses fine.

Another postscript: breathing is FAR easier in the shield than any mask I've tried.

The best paper on this I've now seen -- face shields appear to be better than masks, including on aerosols. Question on aerosols (tiny floating droplets) vs. larger "ballistic" droplets and their comparative viral load. (It's said it takes about 1,000 viral particles to cause an infection.) What's the comparative viral load of aerosol vs. ballistic droplets? Re face shields...

Face shields really stop the larger ballistic droplets, in both directions. But some smaller aerosol droplets can float through on the sides and bottom of a face shield. How big a problem is that, in terms of viral load? Is there any research yet on this?

The statement, “Study after study has indicated that the virus can also spread via tiny droplets less than 5 microns, called aerosols” is also false. While laboratory experiments have shown that SARS-CoV-2 particles can remain in the air,...

The study linked in that article notes: “When a smaller cough aerosol was used (VMD = 3.4 μm), the face shield was less effective, blocking only 68% of the cough and 76% of the surface contamination.”

“In the period from 1 to 30 minutes after a cough, during which the aerosol had dispersed throughout the room and larger particles had settled, the face shield reduced aerosol inhalation by only 23%.”

An N95 mask blocks 95% and a P100 mask is blocks 99.97% of >300nm particles. Most transmission is going to occur from people breathing and coughing near you while you’re in environments with people for prolonged periods of time. Not from someone coughing on your face.

This was my thought exactly,I wear a p100 mask and have great confidence in it when used properly. With every inhale breath while wearing face shield, all the air just comes from the bottom and sides which obviously can still carry covid19 virus particles unfiltered into airways
