I don’t understand the point of AirPod cases.

Wait- I thought you were asking as a user. The case the came with the AirPods have a built in battery that will charge the earbuds when inside. To charge the battery you have to plug it in. “Cases” for the case can add Qi charging.

Yup. The only real world benefit I see of adding said 3rd party case for the OEM case is to add Qi charging. Although - a 3rd party case with a Tile Tracker would be useful.
