i just... i don't understand kingdom hearts. and this lack of sound effects in this trailer isn't helping.

Probably because the story is hard to understand unless you devote a good chunk of time in the lore. I know plenty who are in love with the franchise and still have trouble describing it. It's not a story you can pitch effectively in a sentence or two.
