He was told to go national, he'd have to be "less Geator, because what he does doesn’t make sense outside of Philadelphia," Ben Vaughn said. "Everything he says rhymes, and he makes up words that don’t even exist. In Philly, we didn’t even question it."

Casey speculates whether 1974 could be the first year ever with 52 #1 songs, after each of the first five weeks of the year saw a new #1. In the end, it was only 36 #1s. Which set the all-time record. #at40

“I Love” Casey’s #AT40 story about Tom T. Hall winning a 1973 Grammy in the Best Liner Notes category. As a proud recipient of that same Grammy three years ago (now renamed Best Album Notes), I say more power to him! Tom T.’s notes were funnier than mine, btw.

Casey mentions Donny Osmond is on the chart with “another oldie.”Actually, every one of his 70s solo hits, plus his duets with sister Marie, were covers of oldies (and yes, that includes Sweet & Innocent, originally done by Roy Orbison) #at40

Sexy Mamaby the Moments was one of several R&B hits at that time to use the idea of the love “jones.” Others included Spinners Mighty Love, Eddie Kendricks’ Keep on Truckin’ and of course the original “Love Jones” by Brighter Side of Darkness-parodied by Cheech & Chong. . #at40

On this week’s 1974 #at40, Casey finds it notable that 23 of the artists on this countdown had already had #1 records. Eventually, 30 of the 40 artists on the chart will have had a #1 hit. (That’s a lot by historical standards.)

Just returned to NYC after visiting the inspiring Agahozo Shalom Youth Village in Rwanda, where at-risk teens enter a nurturing community that instills hope & optimism while offering a top notch education & life preparation. Met teens who I’m sure will go on to do great things.

Dancing In the Moonlight is one of those records that went from largely forgotten obscurity to beloved classic, played at every wedding I’ve been to in the last few years. And well deserved. It’s just pure pop perfection. #at40

Nice article in my college’s Alumni magazine Includes a Spotify playlist of songs I associate with our college radio station—WAMU-AM—and with my time on campus. Good memories, for sure.

Further to Casey’s comment that the top 9 records in the countdown were by artists who’d had #1 records: The top 13 all eventually had #1s and 29 artists on the countdown that week eventually did. #at40

I remember when #Pele was Warner Communications’ international goodwill ambassador after he retired from the NY Cosmos & his office was right by mine at WEA in NY. He was gracious and friendly, & I was privileged to have gotten to know him for a brief time.

If you only listen to one podcast this year I highly recommend that you listen to this one. If you’ve already listened to a podcast, then never mind. But this one is really good. open.spotify.com/episode/4fMXCc

RIP Stax records founder Jim Stewart, 92. I had the honor of working with him on a few projects decades ago after the release of the Stax/Volt box set. I last spoke to him 3 years ago, and he was still sharp. Here we are in Memphis in 1991 with Stax legend Rufus Thomas.

By late December of 1975, That’s the Way I like It would pull off the extremely rare feat of falling out of the #1 spot for 3 weeks and then climbing back up to the top #at40

Pete Wingfield’s Eighteen With a Bullet is my fave song on this week’s 1975 #at40. The song magically spent a week at #18 with a bullet on both the Billboard & Cashbox singles chart, when the charts were somewhat susceptible to manipulation. Although in this case I’ll forgive it
