Me, a wheelchair user: “Is your restaurant wheelchair accessible?” Employee: “Not yet.” Me: “When?” Employee: “I don’t know.” Disabled people are approximately 25% of the population. Access laws have been on the books for decades. Not yet is not acceptable.

Restaurant owner: “Access for disabled people is a burden that we can’t handle right now.” Access for disabled people is not a burden. Undoing discrimination against and exclusion of disabled people is not a burden. Disabled people are not a burden.

When an airline breaks a wheelchair, it is not an inconvenience. When paratransit is hours late for a disabled person, it is not an inconvenience. When an interpreter is denied for a deaf person, it is not an inconvenience. Stop minimizing the harm done to disabled people.
