On the heels of public commitments by the Uzbek government to unblock the internet, it should also acknowledge this terrible massacre, allow relatives and society at large to meaningfully discuss and investigate, and yes, provide justice. #RememberAndijan

I had the honor and privilege last June to meet with a witness of those terrible events on May 13, 2005 who fled the violence only later to serve an unlawful prison term. When we met in

And like many Uzbeks grappling with tentative changes in their society, she was at once hopeful and also skeptical, optimistic and also scared. She was so happy to be free, yet physically scarred and unable to walk due to the physical horrors of prison.

She deserves true rehabilitation and support, as do so many Uzbeks who endured the isolation and privations of the country’s repressive recent history. On this anniversary, I’m thinking of her and hoping she’s finding her way. But acknowledgement from authorities is essential.
