Dear editors: Please, I beg you, stop using this stock illustration for stories about #autism. Autistic people are not "trapped" behind a wall of anything, many find the puzzle pieces offensive, and by now, it's the most clichéed image you could possibly use. Please, just don't.pic.twitter.com/YcT4zipYFP

Additionally, autism is not purely a childhood experience. Adult autistic people exist. To always use photos of kids in stories around autism, unless specifically about autism in kids, is infantilising!

Reminds me of all the stock photos of chronic fatigue syndrome showing a well-dressed lady yawning at her desk like it's a little 3 pm lull.

yes! I just saw this the other day. This does not look like someone who feels like they’re going to collapse and/or die, a devastating violent illness.pic.twitter.com/BxHb8Zrwd6

This message also goes to the stock photo houses who tag this photo with the word “autism”. When editors are looking for an image to use in an article about autism, my guess is they type “autism” into, say, Getty Images, and voila, this photo is returned.

Doesn’t excuse the editor’s poor judgment in selecting the photo, but if the stock photo site hadn’t already associated this photo with autism, the editor probably wouldn’t have even seen it as an option.
