I'd like you to do me a favor Use your phone / a notebook to keep track of the number of times you use ableist language in conversation this week Lame Blind to criticism Falling on deaf ears Don't be a spaz Retarded Then ask "what was I trying to say?" You'd be surprised

If you get a parking ticket and you say "That's lame!" What you actually meant was "That sucks!" If you die in a videogame and you yell "that was retarded" what you actually meant was "That was bad" Ableist language is inserting a disability in place of a negative word

Just as we used to say "gay" when something was bad, using disability terms as an alternate word for a negative situation or feeling is common in today's language But just as we stopped saying gay to mean bad, we can stop saying these words too Think about the words you choose

Great question. "Blind play through" or "going in blind" Can easily be replaced by saying "No spoilers play through" or "Undiscovered" or "first" (if it is your first) A blind playthrough would be to turn your monitor off, and that's not what most meanhttps://twitter.com/lucanaii/status/1272645984149962754 …

I saw a tweet that saying blind playthrough is ableist but I'm not sure what could replace that term. And I don't mean it as first playthrough but as playthrough where I haven't read/seen anything about the game beforehand :/ too bad I can't find the original tweet

"Falling on deaf ears" is a phrase I've used enough in day-to-day conversation that I never really thought about the words themselves. Thank you for pointing out the ableism inherent in these sayings. I want to be a better ally, but frankly, sometimes I just gotta be told.

As someone with hearing impairment, I am not afraid of the "d" word. If people use it in idiomatic terms, fine. I'm deaf to criticism of my opinion. Literally.

I know for sure I use the word "lame" a lot in place of "uncool", "cheesy", or "pathetic", and I think a lot of that is the actual meaning of the word isn't something I've heard used in proper context very often. It's definitely one I want to eliminate from my vocabulary.

I also use lame a lot. Might sound uneducated, but I have no idea what that is supposed to mean other than something being uncool 🤔

Lame is an adjective that means having a body part and especially a limb so disabled as to impair freedom of movement. It can also be used as a verb to describe the act of injuring a person or animal so they cannot walk.https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/lame

I had no idea “lame” meant what it did. Wow I say that all the time. Will now work on trying to change that
