Steven Spohn (Spawn)’s Tweets

I love doing these educational tweets because they serve a dual purpose. 1. Educating those who may not know about a subject and providing resources teaching them how to be better 2. As a public service exposing jerks you can block before forgetting they ever existed

I've no desire to be an award-winning disabled writer, inspiring disabled speaker, industry recognized disabled advocate. I'm not interested in being the best *disabled* anything. The only thing that I'm interested in being is the best version of me I can be, disabled or not.

Supporting others can be as simple as sharing a kind word. A small, genuine compliment can change someone from feeling down to having their day completely turned around.

I can tweet wisdom. I can counsel & advise. I can wax poetically with heartfelt speeches. I can inspire you by living despite my challenges But I can't make you WANT to be a better person. Only you can decide you want to learn & grow, to be better I can only show you the door

My "lane" is anything pertaining to PWD. I'm going to speak out about any politician that intends to harm us, any policy that might hurt us, or subjects uncomfortable for some like disabled people having sex or death You follow me, you get all of me, not just the parts you like

oh ok, good fucking riddance 🥰
A message sent to me containing my own tweet which was a quote tweet of Biden's, where I commented on the status of our medical industry and the cost for those with chronic illness or disability

The message sent to me in response to that tweet reads:
Hey jambo. I've followed you for a while, been a fan for a year now but this is the third time I have seen you post something like this and it doesn't sit right with me. I get where you're coming from but as a public face and gaming creator I don't believe this is something you should be commenting on. You have an impressionable audience and an influence, so just some advice: bringing politics onto your social media is a bad look. I know you may not remember or know me but I want to let you know I will be unfollowing. This is not a streamers place to comment on our government or its runnings you play games and create a place to escape those things. Please stay in the lane given to you.

I wish you the best and hope you find inner peace.

Stories told through television, movies, books, & other art, weave the fabric of society. So, until writers, showrunners, etc., start telling stories of disabled people successfully and joyfully integrating with the world, society will always believe disability is a burden.

We have to stop putting out these story tropes where the disabled person needs cured so that an able-bodied person (who loves them very much) can be proud of them again. Or we have to stop being surprised when society holds on to the view that a disabled person has less to offer

Writer friends: It makes for strong emotional stories to show someone beating a disability. Sure. But it teaches the wrong life lesson; that person is lesser because of the disability. Which isn't true. Disability changes how you interact with the world. But you're still you. 2/2

I love medical shows like ER. But I don't love when the case of the week is a patient with a disability who needs cured. The blind mom who needs a tumor removed so she can see so her daughter won't think less of her. The wife upset hubby can't dance after a foot amputation. 1/2

Humans make mistakes. We have moments when we feel down - about ourselves & the world around us. We fail each other & sometimes ourselves. We fall. But we also learn, grow, & get back up. In a world that often expects perfection, it's easy to forget that it's okay to be human.

Don't underestimate the power of being bored. Studies show our brains are the most active, particularly in creative endeavors, when we allow ourselves to be bored Instead of seeking to fill every second of your day with something entertaining. Allow your mind to wander sometimes

The thought of death is uncomfortable & terrifying but it can also be a powerful motivator to make the most of every moment we have left Ignore the clichés. Make sure that you're doing something every day that puts you even a little bit closer to doing what you want in this life

Being terminally ill, I'm pretty debilitated and yet still contributing to society. And only people who underestimate me think of me as feeble or ineffectual. We need to stop with this narrative of disabled & elderly people are not valuable because they are not productive enough.

2. Death is a loss but living too long is also a loss. It leaves most of us debilitated and unable to contribute to society. We are no longer remembered as being vibrant and engaged, but instead as feeble and ineffectual. thetimes.co.uk/article/zeke-e

I have never wanted to be strong. The strongest among us can be broken when asked to carry too much. Strength is not always the answer. No, I do my best to be resilient Because resilience is not about being immune to pain, it's about having the courage to feel it and keep going.

Disabled people like me live in fear of people like this. It's not a troll. Not somebody trying to be cruel. They honestly believe *they* should not change their life for the sake of other people. What's scary is that many more people feel that way who just don't say it out loud.
Phil Montgomery says "I'm sorry about your children's lung problems but that's literally how it should be. The vulnerable should stay home and the rest of the world should be able to just carry on with life as usual. I'm not giving up my freedom because other people are vulnerable."

Time isn't your friend, it's a ruthless enemy. It doesn't care what you're going through. It'll keep going. Make the most of every day in a way that adds to your life. Be productive. Gain happiness. Use it on others. Spend your time how you see fit but spend it, don't let it slip

Your disability doesn't define who you are, it's a part of your story. Every day is a new opportunity to write a new chapter showing the world what you are capable of.

Shout out to the friendship organizers. The ones willing to send the first message, organize activities, drag you out of a bad mood, or sit there with you until you are okay. You are the real ones. It takes such emotional fortitude to always be the one reaching out. I salute you

We shouldn't be so averse to making mistakes. If you aren't making mistakes, you aren't trying new things, you aren't exploring, being adventurous, or doing anything new. Making mistakes is the first step to being really good at something you'll really enjoy.

Sometimes even the best of friendships don't last forever. Someone who was critically important to a chapter in the book of your life might not have a recurring role. While we all hope for forever best friends, sometimes people are only in your life for a reason or for a season.

Don't waste your energy worrying. Worrying is as useful as having an extra long tail in the middle of a room full of rocking chairs. Instead of worrying, use your energy to create, learn and grow.

You have to stop comparing your wins to other people's win. You are not at the same point in your journey as they are in theirs Celebrate things that are victories for YOU. Be happy about luck coming your way, Enjoy when your plans worked out. Unabashedly revel in your successes

Dear James Cameron, I've been streaming your movies while sitting on my ass my entire life. Still gonna. Signed, Wheelchair User Steve

When asked about his feelings on Avatar: The Way of Water being likely to cross $2 Billion in ticket sales, James Cameron replied "We’re saying as a society, 'We need this! We need to go to theaters.' Enough with the streaming already! I’m tired of sitting on my ass."

Some people will hate you for being selfless. Some will despise you 'cause you're attempting to be a good person. Because you're trying to make this life count It's not on you to stop trying to do good in this world because it makes bad people feel bad. It's on them to be better
