What's not part of Jeff Bezos' story, is that today as he adds billions more to his wealth and on pace to become the first trillionaire in history, there are millions of families who have no wealth because in order for Bezos to be rich many have to be poor. #TechIsNotNeutral

The mudslinging that has emerged on the right attacking Gigi Sohn's FCC nomination is no surprise. The fear has nothing to do with the content of their baseless attacks and has everything to do with whose interests are served with a leader like Sohn.

The point is these cameras were only successful in affirming what those of us who grew up around racist cops already knew. Cameras don't keep us safe. Police kill because it is a feature of this institution, not a bug. Waiting for that story to be told.

What are the practical solutions behind the demand to #DefundthePolice? Here's a good resource from answering this question.

Our guide "#DefundThePolice—Invest in Community Care" is a pragmatic resource for communities looking to implement non-police mental health crisis responses. It goes over models and key considerations for meaningful shifts away from cops: bit.ly/NonPoliceRespo #CareNotCops

Like how is it cities like Memphis afford to spend millions of dollars buying military grade tech while schools, housing and other essential needs go underfunded? Part of the answer lies in federal grants that have expanded police budgets.

The New York Times failed to tell a more meaningful story about police and state violence against Black people. In fact it's a failure that has repeated itself for over a hundred years when this paper of record has covered the lynchings of Black people in the US.

But of course this context and history didn't make it into The NY Times article. Instead they highlighted the voice of a retired cop who installed the cameras. Peppering his perspective throughout and giving him the majority of airtime in this article, over 150 words.

The sub headline points to the conclusion this article wants you to draw. That w/o surveillance footage from this camera, we would not know what really happened to #TyreNichols. Except Black people and POC folks did not need footage to confirm what our experience has taught us.

The police exist to protect and serve themselves. #TyreNichols family was lied to by the police about what happened in an effort to hide their culpability. No level of transparency now can change a pattern of criminalizing victims. Copaganda is a feature not a bug.

And what’s worse is Meta’s message to us is that so long as you are rich, powerful and preferably white, the rules don’t apply to you. Donald Trump literally invited violence and has faced no consequences from anyone with the power to hold him accountable including Meta. #shame

The truth is Meta chose not to pick a side. The extreme version of that Friend who can never choose where to eat. Except their indecision shows this platform is ill equipped to confront the complicated task of managing speech. Shit just days ago Brazil saw their own Jan 6th

2 years ago, Meta chose to suspend Trump for two years rather than permanently ban him. They claimed they would evaluate at the end of 2 years if a threat to public safety still existed. What about Trump’s behavior makes anyone think he’s any less dangerous with a bullhorn?

Thank you for writing this. A much needed bit of writing to contextualize this moment in Internet, social media and movement history.

In my latest piece for @truthout I spoke w some really smart ppl about the chaos we've all experienced here. I learned a lot about how to think of social media as an institution, why it feels essential, & what we might do about how crappy it is truthout.org/articles/twitt

Incredible news and an incredible gift to families fighting to stay connected with their incarcerated loved ones.

It's important to call out whose interests are protected by failing to confirm Gigi Sohn to the FCC. There is no excuse for the Senate to delay any further.

Must read thread on Musk & hits an important point. Musk's rise to being the richest person in the world was aided by media pundits who crowned him a genius. Coverage on Musk should've come with this disclaimer, to paraphrase Twitter, he "may or may not be notable."

this is weird and overcomplicates it he's a red-pilled clown helping the global right wage an information and propaganda war against the kind of people who believe in crazy things like environmental and labor protections twitter.com/karaswisher/st…

Whose interests are being protected by not advancing a vote for Gigi Sohn? Time is running out for Senate Democrats to move Gigi John's nomination through the lame duck session.
