A lot of the angst over the Iowa caucus mess is due to TV treating election night as entertainment and training the public to seek speed before accuracy

  3. This has literally nothing to do with being president.

  5. No, , no. The media shaped media narratives. Blitzer's Superbowl makes a contest for 41/4765 delegates a national spectacle. Left alone, w/o national press camped in every hs gym, this would be fine.

  6. Some day, someone will write a great book about how what has seemed like responsible political reporting and thoughtful political commentary has so poisoned our perception of political reality that it made where we are now inevitable.

  7. Let me just say etc. It's fine to report the results when they come in, whenever that is. The fevered anticipation & careful reading of every bird entrail distorts reality. Your job is to report. Just report. Get out of the story. Thanks.

  8. 8/ Where the people see party identity above country & esp where their nat'l ldrs also can't tell the difference, multiplying factions is a sham. It's a shell game distraction. You're probably thinking this is where I turn to the solutions? Sorry, I can't think of any. /END/

  9. 7/ Senate acquittal not only will usher the post-checks and balances era. It also will tell us no longer to teach Fed 10. It cannot apply. It's not a safeguard anymore. Multiplying factions is cover for a demagogue when the people really don't want to shop the ideas marketplace.

  10. 6/ No matter how many voices are permitted on Twitter, a people schooled to believe politics is a 2-sided football game will read Twitter looking for that. It only takes a shameless, selfseeking bully to exploit that. A multi-factional platform becomes a megaphone for 1 faction.

  11. 5/ Then came the Twitter era. LOOK! Everybody has a voice & every point of view can be heard here! So many factions! But look. Really, the two factional sides have been made more powerful by skillful manipulation via Twitter. Trump is the perfection & destination of this trend.

  12. 4/ But the real culprit is our media landscape. This has been a long time coming. First, seeking easily digested simplicities, TV turned politics into a football game and gave it ESPN coverage to make sure we never mistake politics for something complex.

  13. 3/ The 2 party system isn't new, though it didn't quite exist as Madison wrote, he & other authors were preaching agnst parties. (Later, they went out & formed parties.) But the 2 parties are, you may notice, not a lot of factions. That's one thing.

  14. 2/ The cure, he says, is to promote faction so it will become harder for any single faction to prevail unless it can win substantial support. That sort of worked until recently. Some new stuff has conspired to make Madison's solution dangerous.

  15. 1/ Let me tell you something about James Madison. In Fed 10, Madison famously tells us multiplying factions will protect us from danger of faction. He worries with a lot of constitutional authors that some faction will prevail and gain power, demagoguery & dictatorship follow.

  16. The still could prevent an era of uninhibited retribution & dangerous precedents for executive action. All they need to do is vote the facts they seem to agree are facts. And, naturally, they won't because .

I don’t know why the Iowa Caucuses are taking so long, it should be as simple as using Concur to book a flight, make a hotel reservation or report your travel expenses!

  19. Yep. This is going to be bad. Then it will actually get worse after re-election.
