Thought you may. I will remain unconvinced if you allow. The argumentation for the safetyism above all is deeply flawed and dangerous in my opinion.

So, here’s your bias: " There is no value in constantly feeling "safe”.”. You assume that, outside of this conference, the others involved are generally safe. I think you know that to be untrue. Now look at John & Charles. Are they generally safe? Probably more so.

If all parties involved here are generally safe, as you assert, then yeah I _might_ have a problem with this whole situation. Maybe. But as of now, it’s extremely asymmetrical.

We are all pretty safe in developed world, in fact the more developed world the more safe members of minorities are. Your arguments are based on the idea of power balance and concept of someone more "powerful" making someone less powerful "unsafe".

Come on man. Don’t pretend like being a PoC or woman in tech or just existing online isn’t a complete fucking shit show.

I can point you to 3 different women who have just this week had to close their DMs because of harassment.

Do you think *I* have ever received any ill-intentioned message? Never. Not a single one. I doubt you have either.

Receiving death and rape threats isn’t safety. “But it’s online so it’s just words” is a weak excuse. You can’t gamble with this stuff.

If I recall correctly, the whole shitstorm around John Sonmez started when he attempted to defend a woman being attacked by an online mob for claiming something contrary to your beliefs about women in tech... He did it with a grace of an elephant, but she was chased off Twitter.

I fundamentally disagree with that characterisation, but don’t have the time to dig up all relevant tweets. If I have time over the weekend I’ll follow up here.
