This @gruber piece is so good. John talks about delight being sapped from iOS post-iOS 7, which is true in many ways. But the tap down state he calls out here is an accessibility issue too. iOS 6 blue was better—more visually concrete and contrasting. http://daringfireball.net/2019/05/vibran …

I’m a Mac user, but right now I’m more excited about the new Win10 update than any recent version of macOS or iOS. When was the last time we were truly delighted or excited by Apple software?

What excites you about that Win10 update? So far, Windows is still absolutely terrible imo—just less now than before. I’m not excited about macOS updates anymore because it’s so refined already. My only wish is for Apple to integrate Magnet … and improve full-screen UI

Maybe I just haven’t been paying attention to Windows, but they have good face id for laptops now which Macs don’t have. And they released Sandbox, which creates a new VM instance on the fly so you can run unsafe apps or websites. They have Time Machine now too, etc.

Windows has had a kind of Time Machine for a long time but even in W10 it was absolute crap. Maybe it’s gotten better in the newest release, but I think its backup feature is fundamentally broken. Windows Hello is indeed awesome but I’m skeptical about its security?

I agree that there still are great additions to Windows. I just think there are so many fundamental things that are still broken (on a UI level) in W10 that are well designed in macOS. But again: I’d love a native Magnet in macOS, better full-screen/spaces, and old green button

Post iOS 7 has famously been so minimal most users could not find , discover on their own, the interface or features of the software. Really a bit cray cray and maddening. And supposedly, all in the service of ‘simplicity’

When Ives took over User Interface design it became all about design, no longer about the user.

I think it’s only consistent to remove delight from the software because Apple has done the same to hardware (Apple logo, sleep light, MagSafe, etc). 😐

For sure. I have an iMac and a Corsair One. The Corsair One is hooked up to a monitor that runs at 165hz - it’s so nice to have interfaces/browsers operate at that speed. But of course the color/contrast/pixel density doesn’t hold a candle to the iMac. When does Apple go 120hz?
