A few of our masonry envelopes. Note that these are already architecture. The goal is to create a vernacular fabric that lives many lives. At any point these bldgs can be reduced back to this distillate state with no loss of identity or cultural significance to their region.

Wow, I never knew the significance of these two May 4 dates so many years apart… thanks for posting this!

May 4 is the anniversary of two important events, both on the East Coast of the US, eighty years apart, that have helped shape modern planning and urbanism for the better around the world. @JeffSpeckFAICP @stevemouzon @VictorDover @mallorybaches cnu.org/publicsquare/2

The title sounds like clickbait, but the article is both thoughtful and provocative. The Prince's Foundation is a wealth of education & resources; Poundbury makes it real at full scale, and INTBAU links it all together. Thanks for the link !

I've said for years that industrial scale has many serious consequences, but this is one I never imagined: dust from industrial agriculture causing widespread destruction & even death on industrial-scale transport infrastructure.

A more authentic architecture can affordably happen if design can embrace the humility of sheer simplicity. Let what’s ‘real’ be the ornament; let the matter of factness of what we do attest to it’s artistic value. Un-design it.

Rendering Rule 1: the more happy people walking around in the rendering, the more likely it is that the renderer is trying to distract you from how bad the design is.

It is amazing how these renderings always have tons of people milling about. As if they were content medieval burghers exchanging pleasantries after church on a sunny Sunday morning and not concrete hell-scapes for harried commuters and the PowerPoint Caste. twitter.com/brent_bellamy/…

Great 🧵on outdoor rooms 👇
Quote Tweet
What makes a room a room? Enclosure, baby. This is why New Orleans rules. It is the peak vibe in the entire US. Why? Courtyards, mainly. A courtyard is a room outside. How do you make walls, you ask (assuming you're not going to actual build walls)?

My column tomorrow: It doesn’t matter how many floating doughnut gardens or elevators to the sky we build, Portage and Main will never successfully attract people if it is simultaneously designed to repel them.

There was such a strong building culture that buildings could be built with what we’d consider a light Design Development set of drawings today.

Reading about urban history continually surprises with the SPEED with which we used to change places.According to Wikipedia, Herbert Gribble won the design competition in March 1869 & they started building in June the same year. Inconceivable today.

Because this Declaration is a listing of principles of neighborliness and community, it cannot be regulatory. But it is essential to the crafting of future regulations & amendments. And it has long been rare or completely missing, in my experience.

HOAs get this wrong: all of the CCRs (covenants, codes & restrictions) read like ordinances or legislature. What’s missing is the constitution, or even the Declaration of Independence from Sprawl that begins with something like “we hold these truths to be self-evident…”

In early stages the teams made various degrees of progress. Some were deliberate on process. At the end of design, some had almost no plans at all while others had robust plans. But within 2:00 of the reveal of the Liberty 3D models, every team had a competent plan. Got receipts.

One of the most critical aspects to bldg mass wall at a production rate is the window and door bucks, which in our case are permanent, and double as actual frames. Once in place, these define our rough openings and become fastening substrates for stock size fenestration units.
