The autism spectrum represents differences in cognition, sensory processing, verbal communication, adaptability, repetitive behaviors, social awareness, and so forth. If each difference has its own color, then we aren’t just ‘on’ the spectrum. We’re all over it.

The autism spectrum also changes for each person over time. Somebody may be ‘high functioning’ in certain areas under normal circumstances, but lower functioning during shutdown or burnout.

An autistic might be nonspeaking and have poor motor control, but have a high IQ and great long term memory. Another autistic can be very talkative and ‘mask’ as neurotypical, while struggling with sensory overload and social misunderstandings. Both are just as autistic.

The problem with treating the autism spectrum as a scale ranging from mild to severe is that on one hand, a ‘mildly’ autistic person’s needs go unmet. On the other hand, a ‘severely’ autistic person’s dignity and emotions are ignored.

I am not ‘on the spectrum’. I’m somewhere over the spectrum. I’m covered from head to toe in it. We autistics radiate every color of the spectrum from a constantly morphing ball of prismatic light. We ARE the spectrum.

What if the autism spectrum was a circle rather than a line, and we could just be a point within it? It would eliminate the high vs low argument, but it’d be hard to define what’s what.. Still, I think it’s a good idea.pic.twitter.com/ALXsdDL2LY

Yes! And even then, it would still require 6 or more points on the same circular spectrum to give some idea of an individual.

I was raised on terms like “high functioning” and “low functioning” and I’ve been trying to unlearn those terms. Your comics have helped me be better for my fellow autistic siblings and address my ableism.
-
Thank you so much! My wife asked me to explain the problem with high/low functioning labels and I needed a comic to explain it.

Side note, I love the way you anthropomorphized the spectrum like that, especially all the pastels you used for the coloring.
-
Autism spectrum should be a pastel rainbow! Much easier on the eyes.
