"Academic" "computer" "scientist" but really none of those things. I program, think, write, talk, teach... rarely in that order. Mostly I make software slower.

Just booked train travel: to Porto in March, and to Potsdam in April. Like so: wrestle with bad web sites (Eurostar, Renfe) and journey splicings (they can't route-find). Fill solution in local web form. Response "travel agent can't book this; book it yourself". Repeat wrestle.

Has anyone written a Unix-like terminal layer implemented in the browser at the DOM level (not raster)? So, for example, a client doing printf() will add some text to the DOM in a <pre> block. Doing getline() will generate a form field and wait for submit ... etc?

This video is the neatest and punchiest (literally!) demo of an early minicomputer I've yet seen.

Our university IT is slowly pushing the line that "GDPR means we can't allow staff IMAP access to their e-mail". Does anyone know whether that's a sane interpretation of GDPR, or other escape routes from the same problem?

I'm delighted to be the Programme Chair for this year's Onward! Papers, and even more to have a stellar PC on board. Time to get thinking about your paper: what's your plan for advancing the state of software? Submissions are due in three months!

ACM-format citation minutiae-that-matter: I am strongly on the side of author-year. It's much more readable than the others. But I encourage everyone who publishes with ACM to vote, whatever your take....

Looking to do a PhD in computer science, and possibly in programming languages? is a great place. Next application deadlines is coming very soon (31st of January). But there’s another one in March/April. Get in contact if you’re interested!

Academics are, if nothing else, trained detectors of bullshit. So it's a bold strategy of UCEA and others to build their arguments on bullshit data.

This is why much of computer science "education" scares me. I mostly follow Humboldt: education should turn out "well-informed human beings and citizens". So *all* degrees must address social issues deeply. Problem: making/finding enough 17-18yo "CS" applicants who want this.

I'm still on strike, which has let me find time to finish a blog post I started ages ago -- on the many myths believed about "postdocs".

If I have some data currently in the form of a spreadsheet, is there a decent "modern" webified way to make it available such that it's (a) viewable on the web, (b) easily importable, and (c) easily programmed against? Self-hosted solutions are preferred. I know, so demanding...

I'm delighted to be lecturing at PLISS next year. Implementation issues shape the experience of using our programming languages to a huge extent. I'm biased, but... it's a space that is fascinating to learn about and very fun to research in!

"Stagnation of debugging technology has stunted the imagination of developers and tool builders" -- so true! We need to break the cycle.

I can't help thinking that if today's senior "leaders" shared the attitude of my current institution's founding Registrar, as witnessed in the remark at the bottom of this picture, the current dispute would not have arisen.

Although I was, even then, one of the well-off ones much of the time, my 7 years as a postdoc gave me a particularly strong feel for the "race to the bottom" that our sector is engaged in, and of the tin ears of our so-called leaders.

The root problems, as I see them, are feeble leadership (which somehow manages to keep giving itself pay increases) combined with a slew of wrong-headed government policies. In some cases the rot goes back decades, but in others it is recent.

I'm on strike this week, in the national dispute over pay, conditions and fairness. I'm one of the lucky ones: although not untouched, I am currently far less exposed to these issues than many of my underpaid and precarious colleagues, in Kent and elsewhere. Solidarity matters.

In x86-64 binary code munging, to get a trap without overloading 0xcc, I've been using ud2 (0x0f 0x0b). But it's nicer to have a single-byte trap... seems you can just do "pop %ds" (0x1f) which is illegal in 64-bit mode. Any downsides to this? (Yep, still procrastinating.)

More BBC, and it gets even worse. An astonishing thread and astonishing letter... the reach of the Kremlin's tentacles is terrifying, as is the complicity of those closer to home.
