Cats hold a revered place within Islam. A popular tale about the Prophet Muhammed (often wrongly attributed to the hadith) says that the Prophet cut his cloak rather than making a sleeping cat move. Detail of the Blacas Ewer , Iraq, 1232

Here's a mystery for you all: a Judeo-Arabic rendering of the Qur'an, apparently dated c. 1575–1625, no place of origin provided but I'd warrant either Ottoman or Safavid (Bodleian MS. Huntington 529). Anybody out there know anything more about this most curious manuscript?

“After 7 seasons of Homeland, it’s nice to see an Iraq war-set thriller that centres on Iraqi lives...Nice because it’s right for a socially conscious broadcaster to commission, but also nice because it makes for some refreshingly original entertainment”

Please don't forget that this is still happening. 'There have been 200 air strikes on opposition-held territory in northern Syria in the last three days, mainly targeting civilians, the US has said.'

One of my main hangups in such cases is that we fail to take into account the role of typology: a medieval text recounts events according to a typological framework that guides the medieval author's interpretation of reality.

One recurring problem when assessing the worth of medieval texts as sources is the application of modern notions of what makes a text trustworthy. Our fixations on originality & the author often tend to unfairly judge a medieval text according to anachronistic standards.

some things that have happened in a 15th c. (prob.) Turkish menāḳıb I'm slowly reading through: -2 saints turned into 1 rock pigeon w/2 heads -saints gifted their hard-working 'dear little dīv' to one lucky guy -Ḥācim Sulṭān cut a mule in 2 w/his wooden sword, didn't say why

Al-Zuhrī reports that there once came to visit the caliph ʿAbd al-Malik a man who spoke Arabic eloquently. When the caliph asked him whether or not he was an Arab, the man replied, “If Arabic be a father, then I am not; but if Arabic be a language, indeed I am.”
