It's the iconic 's birthday, and I summon this anecdote about her whenever I need a little Dolly verve. Say it with me now: "Yeah, but you ain't me." From Alanna Nash's "Behind Closed Doors."

OK Twitter, what's your pick for the saddest country-music song? The characters in The Farewell Tour argue for Merle, Kristofferson, Emmylou, Old Paint—what did I miss?

This is sad, sad, sad news. An original and a trailblazer.

A statement from the family of Loretta Lynn. "Our precious mom, Loretta Lynn, passed away peacefully this morning, October 4th, in her sleep at home at her beloved ranch in Hurricane Mills.” The family of Loretta Lynn.

Removing a woman’s bodily autonomy in the 21st century based on the reasoning of a 17th century Lord who oversaw witch trials & instructed men to be aware of false rape allegations is a bold move. Excellent 🧵

In Justice Alito’s draft opinion reversing Roe, he writes about “an unbroken tradition of prohibiting abortion on pain of criminal punishment,” up until Roe in 1973. He cites, as historical authority, Sir Matthew Hale. Let me tell you about Hale & his views toward women. THREAD

“My name was on it, I don’t ever move away from my name.” ’s fashion billion dollar empire fell into the hands of the wrong company. Listen as explores how after an epic two-year battle, Simpson bought it back.

I asked Simpson about the business Kim Kardashian built; Kim is a neighborhood-mom friend of hers (it's LA). "After three seasons of doing reality, I still have PTSD. I can't imagine doing 17 seasons," Simpson said. "I wish I had a little bit more of her confidence."

Part of that is *serious* insecurity. Executives at her business partner often called Simpson "irrelevant," she told me. It was only when her memoir went to #1 that she realized, "Oh wow, people do want to hear my voice."

Tina will "be pinching my arm in a meeting if I'm saying the wrong thing," Jessica told me. And retailers and licensing partners alike say it's Tina's involvement in the business that made it last, unlike so many other celebrity brands.

Everyone wanted to know: was she really involved in the business, or just lending her name? The answer: Yeah, she's involved. It's her mom, Tina, who runs the show—and who got her entrepreneurial start doing what Jess calls "Jump for Jesus" aerobics at her father's churches.

Her whole life, others—managers, producers, executives—have told her who to be or ignored her retail instincts. "I promise the shoe's going to work. I promise. I promise. I promise. Don't you trust me after 16 years? They do, now," she said.

Score one for fierce women, both Lil, the country singer who's the heart of my new novel, The Farewell Tour, & @griffinemilyj & , who are bringing her into the world with their smarts. It has been a haul getting to this second novel, & I can't wait to get it out there.
