Thanks, as always, to for having me. I’m looking forward to (safely) getting back in the theatre soon myself. 🍿

I think people have gotten a little used to watching superhero movies on streaming. But I think this is going to be something that’s worth getting out of the house for a date night to see. I think the timing is right. It’s got everything going for it.

I believe, simply put, that Tom Cruise and Maverick is the movie that’s gonna get most people to want to get back to the theatre.

has a generational audience that’s been waiting for this. Tom Cruise is still a mega star. (And I’m not just saying this because one of Slated co-founders is close family of Tom’s) 😆

But, otherwise I think being lined up for July 4 is symbolic. To watch a movie that so many generations have grown up with in the post-pandemic world is exciting. I think that’s one way that it can cross the billion dollar mark.

Everyone’s excited. There are a lot of people who are ready to go watch various movies. Paramount has moved up A Quiet Place to late May. That will be a litmus test.

I’m not necessarily predicting immediate sell outs in theatres. I think things will start to ramp up fast though. I don’t think this is going to take a year for theatrical capacity to get back to maximum.

I think with pandemic fatigue and the rate of vaccinations going up, there’s going to be explosive demand. So, whoever lines themselves up with the most compelling blockbuster movie first is going to do really well.

The news of LA reopening at limited capacity is a huge signal. California has been super strict with the pandemic. The fact that they are beginning to open up tells you just how raring they are to get going.

They are going to fold in X-Men and the upcoming Avatar franchise. There are so many universes that are about to collide and fall into the Disney ecosystem. So, Baby Yoda has a very bright future. 😎

I think it will always be theatrical tentpoles, maybe shorter windows, maybe moving to PVOD, followed by the streaming strategy.

However, shortening the windows and moving some things to premium VOD before they go streaming is the viable strategy. And, as they get to the quarter billion subscriber mark, that is ultimately where everything is going to end up.

That said, Disney’s IP has done extremely well theatrically. It’s a huge profit center. So they don’t want theatrical to go away. Disney in no way is going to want to undermine the power of theatrical.

Everyone’s talked about shortening the theatrical window for decades. The fact it’s finally happening means it’s something that consumers want as well. And that studios know is a way to rapidly monetize using premium VOD.
