The Irish for the Big Bad Wolf is "Fáelchú Féolchar Fuilech", which keeps the alliteration but literally means bloodthirsty voracious wolf.

I had a chance to talk about one of my obsessions this evening, as part of a gathering organised for students at Linnaeus University. It was great fun to share the nitty-gritty of fragment research. (Syddansk Universitetsbibliotek, Herlufsholm 534.11.)

Introducing the 400th manuscript fragment to call home: Leaf from a fascinating & important Breviary made in Norwich, ca. 1416-57. Auctioned in 2003 as 13C Italian MS, & immediately broken. Been hoping to begin reconstructing this for a while.

Lead seals were attached to cloth to confirm taxes had been paid and it was good quality. I've found hundreds on the foreshore but few with a date, so I was happy with the one I found yesterday. I can only make out 16 but it’s above an Elizabethan coat of arms so 1600-1603

Somewhere between 3 and 7 quires ranging from four to 27 leaves. There's a singleton in there, too, but am I going to share the specific location of that rogue leaf? No I am not.

Every now and then when, I lose sight of what it is I am handling every day, I take a look at the seals in TNA SC 13 to remind myself yes this stuff is awesome

...but this strikes me as a very gendered assumption (plus it looks flat). Am I imagining that the woman's face looks thoughtful, as if engaged in an act of reading? I suppose this contributed to the laptop hype, but why no suggestions that this is a depiction of literacy? Ideas?

Interesting use of early manuscript waste. Here four parchment fragments are used to line a ca. 17th-century[?] embroidered silk purse. BPL MS q Med. 277

Early repairs were made to tears in the parchment in this 13th century copy of Peter Lombard’s Magna glosatura; in some cases the thread used has since fallen out:

I’m particularly fond of this 12th-century noted Missal recycled as an early book wrapper. Different grades of script, lovely “floating” notation, and battle scars galore.
