To help Janet Yellen sleep better:
A U.S. government deficit is just a dollar surplus in some other part(s) of the economy.
And the national debt is just that surplus transformed into an investment in US Treasuries.

1/ We owe interest on bonds. We also now pay interest on reserves. We could stop issuing bonds tomorrow & still create $ out of thin air.
