ECMO is like a dialysis machine but a hundred times more complicated. It requires a highly specialized team led by a perfusionist to operate. It needs 24/7 monitoring by humans. You can’t just “buy more machines”: the training to learn how to operate it takes 4 years.

Need both machines and operators. It'd be like saying "why don't they get more helicopters to fly more people out of there?" when all the helicopters are in use and pilots are still months away from being trained up on it, etc.

Read the responses by the health system. Even if they ordered 100 it take 4 years to train a tech to use them properly
