I could be missing some context here, so apologies if I'm mistaken. You mean as in...you RP'd with them on one toon, switched, and they still got in contact with you? Only thing I can think of is that they added you on their end to their friend's list.

On the same character (forgot to mention that my bad :p) I met someone via rp and i remember well i did not add them to my list or got any inv by them. Yet they still can send me msgs in game so far. It is still confusing me how ppl can do that still.

they might've added you as an in-game friend and just hit you up when you log in. unless you're talking about btag whispers, which may be people you share a bnet-based community with

They can put your character in their friendlist, which is different from requesting you to be bnet friend with them, doesn't notify you either. They can only see if you are online on this character though

Or they can wisper to you directly, since they know your character's name. Like "/w Ulvetanna-ArgentDawn"

1: They can see your wow name when targeting you. Find your name /Who and right-click and whisper. They can also add you to their friend list. (The ol'fashioned way.)
-
2: When it comes to trp, I often remember character names but I also use the in-built relationship status to mark people I've interacted with but not really gotten friendly with,(I use the friendly when I get their name.) So that I can more easily find them when wandering around.

As others have said, anyone can /whisper you so long as they know your character name. Anyone can /friend or /who your character. Also, TRP3 allows you to "scan" a zone (even one you're not in!) for other same-faction players also running TRP3. and shows them on a map.
-
You can block contact from someone else (and their alts!) with /ignore. If you don't want to be located via TRP3 zone scan, go into TRP3 Settings > Register Settings > Unclick "Enable Character Location". (This will disable your own ability to scan for others. too!)pic.twitter.com/6v4sN5eaM5
