I bet they could dress up the move in social justice language. After all, didn't github already implement some sort of CoC silliness? "Underrepresented groups will contribute more, they don't do so now because they are busy being oppressed, with payment they will make time."
I've heard several variations on this argument as well from open source friends over the years (as well as calls to pay contributors/speakers for social justice reasons). Don't see what's so bad about the take other than the tone ;)
