What explains this? Was it political correctness? Continuity bias? The complacency of the elites? Lack of historical knowledge? Virtue-signaling? Groupthink?pic.twitter.com/YYEhIPKR2r

Status signaling. Journalists are basically all stupid groupthinkers and take their cues from their corporate/media masters. The early warning bells on coronavirus came from independent thinkers, not their masters. Thus the reaction. What you are seeing is a status argument.

If I'm understanding, the idea is something like, "don't give status to these independent thinkers telling you to worry about the virus" + "give us status by listening to us and don't worry about the virus"

Yes, but the very last about "don't worry about the virus" is not there. They dont care about the virus. To a journalist everything is words. Virtually ALL journalism is a status argument, not about facts or even real life.

In that case... maybe every headline could be replaced with "Give Us Status By Listening to Us"

No no--again, they are assuming they are high status. They are simply trying to keep others from gaining more status, because they see it as zero sum and tribal. People who think and act freely are their ideological and psychological enemies

Ah I see. Idea was envy/status anxiety that people were listening to tech bros or w/e about the virus and they had to undercut them. V interesting

EXACTLY! Why do you think virtually all journalists hate tech? They see tech increasing in status as taking theirs. Its why the coverage tone shift about 6-8 years ago, once they realized tech was their enemy--tech people are only NOW catching on this is a status game to them

That is a great piece, but it misses one thing: MANY MANY journalists and activists are trust fund kids. Its not resentment of tech per se. Its a way for them to work out their issues with their parents and their envy for people who do things. They project their issues on others
