I would never apologise to someone who said "will you apologise." Even if I'd just hit them in the head with a cricket ball, I wouldn't do it. There's something about the words that just stinks of "Soviet prosecutor".

It misses the crucial point of apologies - and perhaps even virtue in general - which is that you must have a choice not to do it in order for it to be valuable.

This is why nobody is ever satiated by the public apologies extracted by online hate mobs. Everyone understands it correctly as a PR statement rather than an apology.
