The thing is it's kinda hard to tell what it's about just from listening to the cast album w/o reading along with the Wikipedia summary so this was also MY reaction after already becoming obsessed with it in like 9th grade

yep I had no idea until I bought a copy of the screenplay and read it over a weekend and left myself an emotional wreck. Pretty sure I didn't really cotton on that Connor died until I did that, I just listened to the soundtrack and was like "ooh happy musical".

Do people not know that Connor dies? It's mentioned fairly explicitly in the lyrics, like in "Requiem."
