    - I should read up about the details of this, but it seems a typical DOA project. A thread:

On Wednesday it was my pleasure to host for our CODE Colloquium, 2020 series. Great talk & conversations, a culinary surprise (the Munich interpretation of a quarter is actually more close to a half) and overall jolly good fun. Thanks for stopping by!

I'll do my best. Here's my story. I was asked to teach upper-level software engineering many years ago. How hard can it be, I thought. I do SE, I publish in all the major SE confs, this should be easy. I got about a dozen SE books to read over winter break to design my course. »

Wonderful. There are many things wrong with lectures, but also many things magical about them. My very best teachers lectured in the most rigid mode. Of course, what works for Rota won't work for all, but taking away what works for Rota makes the world worse, too.

And this is why we need basic research. Someone is out there today is coming up with answers to questions you'll have tomorrow.

I am giving a (private) talk tomorrow in which I tried to spell out some intuitions that I derived from my weird machine work. They are mostly related to “how to think about exploit mitigations and their likely utility”. Given that I am currently not working on/in security ...

I’ve seen a few static typing fans advancing the “dynamically typed languages are like statically typed languages that have just one type” argument. This is sometimes a useful perspective to take, but it usually isn’t. Dynamically typed languages have different types of values.

I remain baffled at how some of my esteemed academic colleagues repeatedly only accept 0-2 out of 20 papers. We need reviewer feedback or, can we at least start normalizing reviewer scores?

Unlike most "future of work" predictions, I think increased working-from-home time actually IS the future of work. And if you think labor and leisure are leaky today, just imagine what happens work life and home life become more intertwined with each passing decade.

So, my thoughts on engineering performance management have always been a bit idiosyncratic, but Matt's tweets today have me reflecting, so... storytime. 1/

The idea of resumeable errors was left out of C++ because some TI people reported that they didn't make use of it on the TI Lisp Machine. User-visible restart dialogs for errors are probably mostly useful only for power users and thus this remains another route not gone...

Maybe we need something along these lines for security as well? Let's freshen up the environment a bit!
