  1. The continuing impact of General Mattis departure on the Department of Defense -- a new name emerging: former Senator and Navy Cross winner James Webb. My thoughts on Morning Joe

Kim Jung Un is baaaaack. Has a very nice new suit he’s wearing although his haircut is still extremely odd. We will have some real decisions to make in 2019 about the direction of this still dangerous situation My thoughts in Bloomberg

If you will allow me a nautical metaphor, President Trump has been throwing his Generals overboard with alacrity of late. Why? My thoughts in TIME:

Right decision to pull down. Who approved? Terrible judgement frankly. Embarrassing for entire Department of Defense.

POTUS plans to deal with migrants heading to US by cutting off all aid to Honduras, Guatemala & El Salvador. Fails to see that worsening conditions will only INCREASE flow people and narcotics northward. Like threatening to ban time off til morale improves- Counterproductive.

Two books that fascinated me in 2018 are about battles -- one from the Korean War and the other from the pivotal battle of Yorktown that delivered our independence. Here are the lessons I learned from reading them that are valid today:

Big mistake that fails pragmatically. The aid, which is quite modest, pays for counter-narcotics and helps reduce poverty, which benefits us because less drugs and refugees come this way. Really short-sighted and counter productive.

Russia’s new hyper-sonic missile appears to be on track. We are in a new arms race in this dangerous zone of modern weapons. My take on NBC nightly

While we all enjoy Christmas Eve and a blessed Christmas day, let us remember those Sailors out at sea. Here is a beautiful two minute tribute from NBC news onboard an Arleigh Burke destroyer in the North Atlantic, far, far from home.

By throwing out Jim Mattis in the midst of government shutdown, POTUS is basically saying Secretary of Defense is "non-essential personnel." Really? SecDef controls our nuclear weapons, has tens of thousands forward deployed in combat. I'd call that a pretty essential job.

Yet another bad move by the president simply pushing General Mattis out the door and not taking advantage of an additional two months that he offered to serve in order to have an orderly transition in our most important cabinet department. It all feels very chaotic in Washington

Big winners in Mattis departure — Russia and Putin, Iran, Islamic State. He was an implacable foe to each.

Rep Kinzinger calling POTUS video (which implied dead service members would support Trump Syria withdrawal) as "tacky" actually understates how ill-advised that comment was about an equally ill-advised policy.

Pulling troops out of Syria in an ongoing fight is a big mistake. Like walking away from a forest fire that is still smoldering underfoot. Big winner is Iran, then Russia, than Assad. Wrong move.
