Really good bunch for my workshop on statistical analysis of binary data at #emwa54 this afternoon. Finished half an hour early, which is always nice.

Not sure how meaningful that is without also knowing how much pesticide is in the bread. Maybe pesticide assays are sensitive enough that they can detect picogram quantities of pesticides in a loaf of bread. Will a few picograms of pesticides do me any harm?
Quote Tweet
Half of bread sold in the UK contains at least two different pesticides, new government data has found. This is a rise of 50% from last year, & a major increase over the past decade - @PAN_UK

Then a tiger came along. It also sat there enjoying the music. Soon, a dozen or so other ferocious beasts were all sitting round in a semicircle utterly captivated by what they were hearing.

Soon, a large, venomous snake came along. The string quartet looked nervously at it. But the snake stopped, and sat back listening to the music, looking quite content.

Sitting around in the pub one night, one of them brought up the quote, and asked the others if they believed it. Turns out they all did, and thought it would be fun to prove it.

Bit by bit, the NHS is being dismantled. "First they came for the trans people". Even if you don't care about trans people, you are very naive if you think this isn't coming soon to a bit of the NHS you care passionately about

I recently submitted a (FoI) Freedom of Information request to The Porterbrook Clinic, Sheffields (GIC) Gender Identity Clinic that I have been referred to. Their responses expose the shocking state of trans healthcare in the UK NHS. 🧵 1/12

This seems sensible. Haven't signed up for a Mastodon account yet, but may well give it a go. Who else is over there?
Quote Tweet
Everyone moving from twitter to mastodon is very likely to fail because it is a collective action problem, benefits depend on others actions. Here's how it can succeed. It will require your commitment for 1 month to do a few things. Read and retweet if you commit to do them. twitter.com/BrianNosek/sta…

So you're allowed to steal but you wish to charge us to verify who we are? Good luck with that then.

It turns out, we couldn’t afford to do lockdowns. Those who clamoured for them are responsible for untold lost, damaged and diminished lives, thanks to a wrecked economy. For a largely mild virus, a third of people were told to pretend they’d got 🦠

This is it in a nutshell. People often don't have control over the biggest determinants of their health.

On the plane. I think I may be the only person on it who's wearing a mask. Did covid miraculously disappear while I was travelling to the airport or something?

I fully expect Sunak to be every bit as dishonest as Johnson ever was at #PMQs, but on the plus side, I think we can all be grateful for one improvement. Sunak is widely reported to be teetotal, so at least we can expect him to turn up sober.

Is there a phrase for what you get if you concentrate people into camps? This really is getting scary.
Quote Tweet
Asylum policy is getting very, very dark. Concentrating refugees in overcrowded, diseased camps. Accusing them of ‘invasion’ and blaming them for society’s ills. Measuring their bodies to apply pseudo-science. Shipping them off to third countries far away. independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi

I do hope people won't be crying "U turn!" at this as if it's a bad thing. We should welcome Sunak listening to reason. Mind you, still waiting for him to listen to reason about sacking his security-breaching, fascist Home Secretary

There is no long-term prosperity without action on climate change. There is no energy security without investing in renewables. That is why I will attend @COP27P next week: to deliver on Glasgow's legacy of building a secure and sustainable future.
If she's planning to do a procedure that increases the risk of cancer without freely given informed consent, then I really hope no professional radiologist or radiographer would agree to go along with it. Any thoughts, ?

I'm travelling on a plane today for the first time since February 2020. Has anything changed at airports or with flying since then that I should be aware of?

It's kinda funny to see the anger about Twitter's plan for paid verified users from academics who should be familiar to creating content for free, letting it be verified in a non-transparant way by unknown others and paying for it to make sure it's for everyone to see

Really useful explanation. If you've ever found confidence intervals confusing, I thoroughly recommend reading Alasdair's article linked at the end of this thread

Think you know what a 95% confidence interval means? Think again! Despite being one of the most common results in biomedical research, it’s almost certainly one of the most misunderstood You were probably even taught it incorrectly Where did it all go wrong?! 1/

I know there’s a lot going on in 🇬🇧 politics but someone in government should be saying something about why so many more people than usual are dying now. An alarming 🧵 from
Quote Tweet
ONS deaths data has been released for week ending 21 Oct. 2,073 more deaths were recorded in-week compared to the 2015-19 average. That’s 21% more, which is another significant excess. Year-to-date there have been 459,819 deaths recorded which is 7% more than the 2015-19 avg.

When the Home Secretary talks about an "invasion on our Southern Coast" and a Conservative MP tells refugees to "get on a dinghy and go back to France," these are the kinds of forces they're playing with.

I do indeed remember when a bunch of highly talented presenters from local radio did a superb job of holding Truss to account. And I can't help wondering if that's related to the gutting of local radio.
Quote Tweet
Local radio is about to be gutted. This is a terrible loss. And before you shrug and go local radio, so what - remember the morning when they held Liz Truss to account. Hope the BBC rethink this. twitter.com/andycomfort/st…

Since Andrew doesn't seem to know that arriving in the UK to claim asylum is not illegal, he's clearly ignorant on the subject, and shouldn't tweet about it. Perhaps he should stick to tweeting about stuff he does know about, like econo... ... oh, wait

When thousands upon thousands of foreigners enter your country illegally & uninvited, isn't there a word one usually uses to describe that situation? On the tip of my tongue...

1) Asylum seekers aren't required to stay in 1st safe country 2) Faked videos prove nothing 3) There are no legal plane/boat routes 4) Because we take far too long to process asylum claims 5) We don't 6) We aren't
Quote Tweet
The dinghy invasion: 1. Why not stay in 1st safe country? 2. Why throw away papers? 3. Why pay thousands to come illegally, when plane/boat is hundreds at most? 4. Why do we pay £24 billion a year for hotels? 5. Why do we let ECHR tell us what to do? 6. WHY ARE WE SUCH MUGS?

May I suggest that any Tory MPs who think we're currently experiencing an "invasion" go and spend a couple of weeks in Kharkiv, so you can find out what an invasion really looks like.
