Are there any industries besides medicine where so many practitioners are practically forced to "do research", regardless of capability or desire to do so; and despite how this might distract from their "main job"?

And to be clear, there are many impressive medic/nurse scientists that I learn from on twitter and in real life.

Should there be a concentration on closing the research/ practice gap and making sure that existing research is utilised rather than churning out more? More productive use of their time?

I suspect that would be a glorious improvement.

Are you saying medical doctors could become good medical specialists without getting that PhD first? That’s a wild idea!

Q: do people who want to be doctors but hate research be allowed to be doctors? Surely there is a path as clinician that doesn't require an MD. Also, can a doctor be a good doctor without being a "teacher" and expanding the knowledge base?

I am not asking about right or wrong...I am asking I there are other industries that do this to the same degree, out of my own ignorance.

Last Q (surgery specific): can a surgeon be a good doctor if they don't have the skills ( research or stats) to validly evaluate trends in their own outcomes compared to a standard?

It may depend on how one defines "a good doctor."
