There are so many reasons to be frustrated with "it's the pipeline!" arguments, and one of them is that "so this is a retention problem, and we can apply tactics to improve retention?" isn't ever the apparent rejoinder.

I (try) to: 1. Stay open to the possibility I’m wrong 2. Resist all temptation to be the first person in a group to have an idea 3. Make sure I make time to express genuine, specific gratitude for someone helping me (ideally > 3x a week)

Thought more about this last night (good thread!), I also try to be very open about challenges I've faced, ways I'm trying to grow, and relating that to others. When coaching someone, I get pretty specific/vulnerable if there's a similar challenge I've faced.

I try to balance (those convos aren't about me!), but I've found it helps people open up by reminding we're all growing and sometimes find takeaways from my own mistakes (I've learned the most from all I've gotten wrong
). Meta goal is to make mentoring less unidirectional.

In this context... thanking people, recognizing their efforts. Doing my best to be polite and try to help people to get over any imposter syndrome they may have.
