There are so many reasons to be frustrated with "it's the pipeline!" arguments, and one of them is that "so this is a retention problem, and we can apply tactics to improve retention?" isn't ever the apparent rejoinder.

"Pipeline!" makes it seem as though the only thing to do to improve broad representation and career success in tech is to focus on working with junior talent, usually women. Great. So the pipeline problem is usually also a severe narrowing of focus.
