What scares me so much about this is that I see respectful people, that I otherwise admire, succumb to this tendency to bully and shame others online. It does seem like this medium almost encourages it. :(

People maybe aren't used to their words landing & having impact. I was publicly shamed when I was 19 years old and it took me about 8 years to even remotely move on. A lot of people wrote things online or emailed me; I don't think they expected that I read every. single. message.

I think Twitter-the-medium somewhat encourages a dynamic of smalltalk, or gossipy chatter (cf subtweets.) but it seems unique as a place where that kind of speech is likely to directly reach the subject.
