There's something remarkable about the explosion of scooters as an SF public transit category — it's that there *weren't* really electric scooters until they became accessible by sharing/app.

Or maybe scooters are better modeled as an on-demand, electric single-occupancy "bus" — one that magically has a stop a few blocks away from wherever you happen to be, and goes express direct to your destination every time.

"Will my bike get stolen" is a big part of the mental should-i-bike calculation I do before a trip. I'd imagine something similar happens with electric scooters.

This was my experience with an electric bike. Loved riding it but paranoia about leaving it outside and no fun hauling a 50lb bike upstairs lead me to sell it

I see people riding their own scooters here and there, usually in the flatter parts of Oakland, usually with helmets. I think people just find the concept silly, until the benefits become clear.

The same applies for bikes. I go everywhere with on my bike but having to deal with parking is a headache. Citybikes remove that problem.
