There's something remarkable about the explosion of scooters as an SF public transit category — it's that there *weren't* really electric scooters until they became accessible by sharing/app.

So — perhaps electric scooters are really that unhelpful to have on their own, and it's a huge experience dealbreaker if you must to take your scooter along indoors with you?

Or maybe scooters are better modeled as an on-demand, electric single-occupancy "bus" — one that magically has a stop a few blocks away from wherever you happen to be, and goes express direct to your destination every time.

I'd definitely been seeing them around for the past 3 years or so- nothing near what we see today, tho. Two main groups used them in my experience: 1) kids (because they're fun as hell, like hoverboards) 2) commuters going the last mile (ANYTHING to save 5-10 minutes a day!)

ah then someone was paying attention than I was, very good

I didn't notice them til I briefly became one of those horrible electric longboard people. we and the electric scooter people had, shall we say, an understanding

I have many friends who have been using electric scooters for nearly 20 years, but they looked like major dorks until these sharing companies made it mainstream
