using ed scripting in shell scripts to create/modify files looks extremely fun (though I don't think my coworkers would be happy :))

So I learned unix commands initially because I found a UNIX System Operator’s manual or somesuch and read it cover to cover.. years before I ever found a prompt (Mac OS 10.0 followed quickly by FreeBSD). Which meant that for years.. the only editor I knew of was ed.

I was similarly thrilled when I saw scripting usage of the command “yes” for the first time.. using “yes” during an install process will accept any user y/n prompt and get your script through to completion.
