The energy inputs are hard requirements. Moving in the air costs energy. Anything I read that juxtaposes “VTOL” and “low cost” I start looking for how thy are planning to beat the physics of flight.

Something that few people if any have said out loud about drones so far: a drone that takes off vertically assumes the fixed costs of having airport infrastructure as an operating cost built into every flight.

Cost is built into every flight of every a/c. Conventional a/c may use less energy on t/o but physical infra uses lots of land, so they pay fees to amortize airport $. VTOL infra costs less, but you take an energy hit. Cost of energy is trending down...cost of land, not so much.
