You’re a woman invited to give a talk. The invitation includes “we are looking for a female speaker to add to our list” You react: (A) positively - they are proactively addressing the imbalance problem (B) negatively - they should invite me on merit, not gender (C) indifferently

      (D) Positively, as you appreciate the attempt to make the world a better place, but you always feel haunted, during the talk and after, that you were simply a token, and that your career & accomplishments aren't objectively good enough to get a simple speaking gig.

Here's a solid argument in favor of quotas / tl,dr; They're a very effective mechanism for dismantling structural sexism. Contrary to the common criticism, they raise the bar for talent. And the only people they should really upset are third-rate dudes.http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/businessreview/2017/03/13/gender-quotas-and-the-crisis-of-the-mediocre-man/ …

Yes but this question is about how it feels to be invited explicitly to meet a quota hi thx

I mean, I get that it feels awful. But if you wait to be invited on merit you will probably die waiting as long as guys who have every reason to feel insecure have anything to do with selecting. Take the invite and shine. The reasons for invites can change from there.

I'm saying all this as a guy who has had it up-to-fucking-here with mediocre dudes ruining things. Nobody with any sense wants to work with them. Ugly as quotas seem on the surface, they're an elegant way to systematically sideline people who *really* need sidelining.
