You couldn't get a TV job if you were black, then. My dad worked in radio, which is why his station broke the news. My dad ran outside and did a live broadcast from a phone booth, then came back to take eye-witness interviews.
Sometimes you think your dad is just a normal dad-guy and then you grow up and realize what a thing your dad in particular lived through.
He went on to become CBS' first ever black anchorman, and a press secretary to Bobby Kennedy. His career was "a little intense."
