Altered Carbon explores FTL comms instead of drives. Not saying we’re breaking lightspeed anytime IRL, but it’s an intriguing exploration.

Tech-wise we are already past the familiar model that we called “the internet”. Arguably that peaked in 2014. Google often serves requests w/o TCP/IP. Peer storage (DAT) and even peer apps (ETH) are at the toy stage.

Looking further out, is there anything after oral and written language copied mechanically? Nobody knows if there is a common “mentalese” that could be directly transferred without language (probes in your brain sharing feelings, visions, ???). But some believe it has to exist

I garbled that somewhat mentalese is the idea that thought has language-like grammar https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_of_thought_hypothesis … I was thinking about thishttp://news.berkeley.edu/2011/09/22/brain-movies/ …

Was there such a theory before the internet? I can only think of Arthur C. Clarke. So looking into sci-fi seems a good place to start. But there was also a lot of sci-fi that got it wrong :-(.

The uniqueness of the internet is that it's application agnostic and hardware transparent. Pretty well everything since has either been subsumed as general purpose (eg mobile phone) or is application specific on top.
